Shift theatre III

The performances of the five-year project SHIFT THEATRE (2014-2015) are based on records, documents (letters) or/and historical events which are translated by means of imagination and directing into contemporary theatrical language.



A new dramatic text, written by Ivo Svetina, is based on the period from 1831 to 1835 in Vienna, where linguists and authors (Jernej Kopitar, Vuk Karadžić, Matija Čop and France Prešeren) met at the very moment when the script, the writing of the Slovenian language was created. The love of language and research is intertwined with conflicts, censorship and system pressures, spurring some controversy between Prešeren and Čop as well as between Kopitar and Karadžić. A woman and seasons, a form and contents, a profession and private life, the cruelty, which in drama demolishes a bond just born, surrounding and cutting into the space. The cholera and conservative means are fatal enough to destroy young heart. This is a drama (we can say a crime story) about a sense of attachment to the language.
