Through the Stomach to the Heart
Through the Stomach to the Heart is the title of a series of performance art pieces which the artists have been staging since 1999. They all have common foundation. The artist throws parties, which are usually a part of art openings of group exhibitions (e.g. the opening of the exhibition "Maskarady", Inner Spaces, Poznań September 2001), or independent events (Łódź 1999). On those occasions Elżbieta Jabłońska turns into a "gastronomic mother," a housewife and a hostess. In accordance with the slogan "through the stomach to the heart," she tries to seduce her audience and potential participants. Jabłońska "prepares and performs a spectacle with herself in the leading role - of the real woman. Reenacting cultural codes, she prepares food, then bustles (while the others are having fun)." By transferring typical and "obvious" tasks of every housewife to the gallery she robs them of the supposed naturalness. "The artist shows that they are exactly what they become in the gallery - performance.
