Purgatorium, installation, 2005
Curator: Emil Aleksiev,
Museum of Contemporary Art Skopje, Macedonia
Purgatorium (Purgatory)
(...)The icon, that storeroom of our collective memory and archetypes,
is devoured by our fear. However, at the same time, it also builds
it and reconstructs it. The contours do not disappear, on the contrary,
they are even clearer and become relief-like and three-dimensional.
Colour and drawing are transformed into form and structure. The icon
begins to glare with the miraculous glow of hundreds of insects.
(...)Collections of insects become my building blocks. I fill the holes
and cracks with fear and death. However, at some point, the insects are
transformed into a burgeoning energy of new life. The feeling of disgust
reaches the point at which it is transformed into fascination.
